Nike Missile Sunset

SF-88 is a former Nike Missile base in the Marin Headlands that's been restored to near-original condition. Nike missiles were anti-aircraft weapons designed to shoot down Russian bombers. They were equipped with either nuclear or conventional warheads, and hundreds of Nike batteries were deployed around major American cities from the 1950s until the early 1970s.

Propulsion Flight Keeps Engine Fit to Fight

The 35th Maintenance Squadron test cell, or hush house, provides a testing area for an F110-GE-129 engine March 4. Once kicked into full gear, the engine produced about 29,000 pounds of thrust and burned more than 2,000 gallons of fuel during testing.

Helicopter Air Refueling Mission

A U.S. Marine CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron Four Six One approaches an Air Force C-130P aircraft, from the 81st Rescue Squadron during a helicopter air refueling mission. 13,800 pounds of fuel was delivered to the helicopter during the 45 minute mission. Both aircraft are from Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa, which is head quartered in Djibouti, it employs an indirect approach to counter violent extremism. Through a strategy of cooperative conflict prevention the task force helps build the internal capacities of countries at risk to prevail against extremists exploiting instability.

The XM157 Class IV Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) has a range and endurance appropriate for the brigade mission. It supports the Brigade Combat Team (BCT) Commander with communications relay, long endurance persistent stare, and wide area surveillance.
