Scanner Bank
The scanners are kept at the front of the store, just to the right of when you first walk in. Close enough to the door to be convenient to shoppers, and close enough to the registers for the store to keep an eye on them.
Step 1: Pick up a scanner
Nejla scans her Jewel frequent shopper card to get a hand scanner. The hand scanner will also be able to price her items including frequent shopper discounts.
Step 2: Scanner assigned
Pick up the lit scanner to start shopping.

Step 3: Pick up bags
The convenience of the scanner system includes the ability to bag your items *as you shop*, so that you don't need to haul them all out at the end. You can, however, choose not to bag as you shop, and get bags at the end.
Step 4: Shop already
It's like shopping for a registry at a store. Pick up item, scan, see on scanner. Deleting items is pretty easy, and seeing your running total is keen.
Step 5: Check out
At the register, use the scanner to scan the "End of Trip" barcode.
Step 6: Time to pay
It's a lot like the self-checkout terminals of supermarkets I frequent. However, instead of the intermittently frustrating task of scanning items, you scan the scanner, it tells you to pay your amount, and it prints your receipt. As you can see, bags are offered here, JIC you didn't bag as you shopped.
