German type Ae observation balloon
The Germans were prolific users of observation balloons, and they put them to good use by directing artillery onto targets and monitoring enemy troop movements. The "crew" were suspended in a wicker basket and typically had a wireless set, binoculars and one or two long-range, cameras with them.
