Die Lage im Reaktorblock 3 ist auch deshalb besonders beunruhigend, weil dort seit einigen Monaten nicht nur Uran-, sondern auch Mox-Brennelemente eingesetzt werden. Derartige Brennstäbe sind weltweit in vielen Druckwasser- und Siedewasserreaktoren im Einsatz. Auch in Deutschland wurden bis 2008 insgesamt neun AKW teilweise mit Mox-Elementen betrieben. Sie bergen aber ein größeres Risiko, denn sie haben einen höheren Anteil an Plutonium 239.

Die Inhalation von 40 Milliardstelgramm Plutonium 239 genügt, um eine akute Strahlenbelastung von 15 Millisievert im Körper zu verursachen. Dann kommt es zu einer schweren Strahlenkrankheit (siehe Kasten links), die innerhalb weniger Tage tödlich endet. Zudem ist Plutonium 239 ein hochgiftiges Schwermetall, das sich in Knochen festsetzen kann, und eines, das erst nach 24.110 Jahren zur Hälfte zerfallen ist.

Banners and peace cranes – Melbourne Vigil for Japan

Melbourne Vigil forthe people of Japan suffering the effects of the Magnitude 9.0 Earthquake, Tsunamis, and an escalating nuclear crisis. The vigil was held at the old GPO in Bourke Street Mall on March 17, 2011. The candlelight vigil was to honour the victims of this terrible tragedy, and to show concern for the safety of those exposed to radioactivity from the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The vigil was organised by the Medical Association for the prevention of war, the International Campaign to Abolish nuclear Weapons, and Japanese for Peace.
