The protests began in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York.

Occupy Wall Street Day of Action November 17 2011. Hundreds of people blocked intersections in the streets around heavily-guarded Wall Street. A huge labor rally and march over the Brooklyn Bridge followed that evening.
