The History of Tape Storage

Remember tape storage? It was used in everything from mainframes to TI personal computers. Though it's still used as a form of backup media today, hard drives have fortunately replaced tape as the primary form of storage.

DVD master disc

Ever wondered what a DVD looks like close up? Using a 375nm laser diode and a 140nm photo sensitive coating on a peice 1.6mm thick glass. Small areas are exposed, then developed as the glass spins around under the focused modulated laser beam. This is actually an polaroid image of the master disc which is the inverse of a real DVD.

Magnetbandarchiv des DKRZ

Am Klimarechenzentrum werden die Ergebnisse verschiedenster Klimasimulationen gespeichert und für die weitere Auswertung durch deutsche oder internationale Forschergruppen bereit gehalten. Insgesamt sind bereits mehr als 6 Petabyte - das sind sechs Millionen Gigabyte - Simulations- und Messdaten in dem automatischen Magnetbandarchiv des DKRZ abgespeichert
