10.07.2013 – Recent debate over U.S. government surveillance has focused on the information that American technology companies secretly provide to the National Security Agency. But that is only one of the ways the NSA eavesdrops on international communications.

NSA: Upstream program

This slide shows PRISM as only one part of the NSA’s system for electronic eavesdropping. The „Upstream“ program collects from the fiber-optic cable networks that carry much of the world’s Internet and phone data. The underlying map depicts the undersea cables that connect North America to the rest of the world.

11.07.2013 – Microsoft arbeitet angeblich intensiv mit US-Geheimdiensten zusammen. Nach Informationen, die Edward Snowden dem "Guardian" zugespielt hat, soll der Konzern den Ermittlern Zugang zu E-Mails und Skype-Gesprächen gewährt und sogar die firmeneigene Verschlüsselung ausgehebelt haben.

SIGINT bedeutet SIGNALS INTELLIGENCE. Die weltweiten Datenströme werden ausschnittsweise gefiltert und elektronisch auf bestimmte Inhalte untersucht. Die technische Beschaffung erfolgt rezeptiv und ist nur begrenzt steuerbar. Darüber hinaus ist besonders diese Art der Informationsbeschaffung gesetzlich streng reglementiert. Sie ist dennoch zur Erstellung eines belastbaren Lagebildes unverzichtbar.
